New role for ICHI in the yearly Srebrenica commemoration in The Hague

Over the years, the International Committee for Humanitarian Intervention (ICHI) has participated, out of solidarity, empathy and interest in the tragedy concerned, in the yearly Srebrenica commemoration in The Hague, the Netherlands, on the 11th of July, organised amongst others by our ‘sister organisation’ the Political Committee Stari Most (PCSM).

Since PCSM’s disbandment in the Summer of 2017, ICHI has decided to take over some of PCSM’s tasks at the yearly Srebrenica commemoration (see;

PCSM was the original initiator of the first commemoration of the fall of Srebrenica in the Netherlands, remembering the fateful day of July 11, 1995 when the enclave fell into the hands of Serbian and Bosnian-Serb forces, after which more than 8,000 Bosnians (Bosniaks, i.e. Bosnian Muslims) were masacred in a few days’ time.

On July 11, 1996, this first commemoration was held at the Yugoslav Tribunal and the Peace Palace in The Hague. The second Srebrenica commemoration took place on the Square in front of the Dutch Parliament and Ministry of Defense on July 11, 1997. Since then, the yearly commemoration on the 11th July is held at that location.

Since then, more and more organisations have helped organise the annual commemoration, including BiH Platform (; PAXforPeace (former IKV and Pax Christi,; the Bosnian youth organisation Mladi BiH (; and the Association of Survivors of the Srebrenica Genocide 1995 (

Also nowadays on the 11th of July, there is the Marš Mira / Peace March for Srebrenica (information: from Wassenaar to the Square to join the commemoration. This march is held in recognition of the annual peace march in Bosnia from Nezuk to Potoçari (;

Call for contributions and donations

Apart from ICHI, the Foundation History of Totalitarian Regimes and their Victims (Geschiedenis Totalitaire Regimes en hun Slachtoffers (SGTRS);, will be a new a new co-organiser of the yearly Srebrenica commemoration in The Hague from this year onwards.

Both ICHI’s and SGTRS’ contributions to the sustenance of the yearly Srebrenica commemoration will be crucial, if only to compensate for PCSM’s disbandment and the more recent withdrawal of PAXforPeace as a co-organiser.

Therefore, your donations, in this case specifically for helping to maintain the yearly Srebrenica commemoration in the Netherlands, are welcome and will be highly appreciated. You can send these donations to our bank account: NL 60 INGB 0005 221614 (BIC: INGB NL21) t.a.o. ICHI, Leiden, Netherlands with reference to ‘Srebrenica commemoration Netherlands’.

ICHI is particularly tasked to hire sound equipment, information stands and pay parking allowances for all organisers. For this we need sufficient funds.
